Description

Urinary incontinence is an important women’s and Men’s health issue that has traditionally not been recognized. Statistics show that one woman in four experiences trouble with urinary incontinence; one in nine men also suffers from incontinence. The Cochrane Collaboration 2010 demonstrated that pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) should be the first line of defense against stress, mixed and urge incontinence in women.

However, there are many barriers that need to be addressed to bring pelvic health physiotherapy into the mainstream orthopaedic clinic where it belongs. One of the biggest barriers is the lack of adequately trained physiotherapists in completing internal exams, and the assumption that PFMT can be done through external training only. A second barrier, the need for delegation of internal exam from physician to physiotherapist, has been removed in Ontario. These are exciting times, and there are endless opportunities to be had in pelvic floor physiotherapy.
